Introduction
The 442nd Regimental Combat Team was a highly decorated infantry regiment in the United States Army comprised of Americans of Japanese ancestry.  The 442nd fought in Italy and France during World War II against the German Army of Hitler's Third Reich.

Upon returning to the United States on July 3,1946, the War Department issued a press release with the following headline:

HIGH TRIBUTE TO BE PAID NISEI COMBAT TEAM
UPON RETURN ON 4TH OF JULY FOR INACTIVATION

Carrying with them battle honors as proud as any ever won, the 442nd Infantry Combat Team is scheduled to sail into New York Harbor the night of July 4 for debarkation the next day amid colorful reception ceremonies which will precede inactivation of the famed Japanese-American outfit at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey....
